This manuscript on indigo-dyed paper with gold and silver lettering is one of a large set of manuscripts that were dedicated by Fujiwara Kiyohira (1056-1127) to the temple of Chuson-ji in Hiraizumi in the province of Oshu. They were produced between 1117 to 1126. This set is known as the Chusonjikyo (Chuson-ji Temple Sutras). In recent years, they have been reappraised not only because they are an unusual example of copied with gold and silver lettering on indigo paper, but also for the paintings on the frontispiece, which have been compared with other paintings of the same period.
