This manuscript, Lotus Sutra (J., Myôhôrengekyô, or simply Hokekyô), Volume 5, with gold characters on indigo paper, has a beautiful frontispiece in gold and silver paint, which illustrates a scene from the Devadatta (J., Daibadatta) chapter. In the center is the Buddha Sakyamuni, flanked by attendant bodhisattvas and four monks. At the bottom left is a sage, and at the bottom right is the Dragon Princess, who attains enlightenment after offering a jewel to the Buddha. The cover, adorned with auspicious hôsôge floral scrolls, is also painted in gold and silver. This is among the most elegant sutras with frontispiece on indigo paper.
