This sutra was dedicated in 871 (Jôgan 13) by Abe no Komizumaro (n.d.), an official of the sixth rank in the province of Kôzuke (present-day Gunma Prefecture), to pray for his present and future lives. Copying and reading the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra (Skt., Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra, J., Daihannyaharamittakyô) flourished during the Heian period (794-1185), when it was believed that such meritorious acts would ward off natural calamities and epidemics. This dated volume comes from a rare set of Heian-period sutras from the eastern Kanto region of Japan. Today, the Tendai temple Jikô-ji in Saitama Prefecture owns 152 volumes from this set (designated Important Cultural Properties).
