This segment comes from a copy of the Flower Garland Sutra (J., Kegonkyô, in eighty scrolls) in gold characters on dark purple paper. This manuscript is considered one of the best examples of a sutra in gold characters on purple paper with the Konkômyô saishôôkyô (Sutra of Golden Light), which is commonly known as the Kokubun-ji Sutra. The sutra was brushed by a scribe from the Bureau for Gold-lettered Sutras and its surface has a beautiful sheen produced by polishing with an elephant's tusk.
