This volume of the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra (Skt., Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra; J., Daihannyaharamittakyô) was dedicated on the first day of the fifth month of 740 (Tenpyô 12) by Empress Kômyô (701-760). The empress commissioned a copy of the entire Buddhist canon (J., issaikyô) to pray for the repose of her father, the influential statesman Fujiwara Fuhito (659-720), and her mother Lady Tachibana (n.d.), and to express her own devotion to Buddhism. Taking the date from its postscript, this scroll was given the appellation, Sutra of the First Day of the Fifth Month.
