This is an early manuscript of the collection of Buddhist tales, Uchikikishû. It is assumed that the collection originally consisted of two or three scrolls, but only volume 1 has survived. Eigen, whose signature is on the cover, was the owner of this collection, and is believed to have been the artist as well. According to the back of the paper, the production date was probably around 1134 (Chôshô 3). A large part of the text written on the reverse side of the scroll concerns the affairs of Enryaku-ji Temple on Mt. Hiei.
