The late Edo-period painter and poet Ema Saikô (1789-1861) was the daughter of the court physician Ema Ransai. Ema Saikô studied painting bamboo in ink with Priest Gyokurin (d. 1814) and the six principles of Chinese painting with Uragami Shunkin (1779-1846). She was also close to the likes of scholars and literati such as the historian Rai San'yô (1780-1832), the poet Yanagawa Seigan (1789-1858), and the Confucianist Murase Tôjô (1794-1853). It is said that Rai San'yô wanted to marry Ema but gave up on this idea because of her father's disapproval.
