This segment of the Collection of Japanese and Chinese Poems for Recitation (J., Wakan roeishû) is known as the "Yamashiro edition," because the original butterfly-bound album from which it came was divided into segments in the Yamashiro area of Kyoto. The decorated paper is made of ganpi, and white lines have been laid within the text. Although the calligrapher is said to be Fujiwara Sadayori (995-1045), the writing is more consistent with a late-Heian (794-1185) style. Both the Chinese characters and phonetic kana script are well formed, and the brushstrokes exude strength.
