Emperor Goyôzei (1571-1617, r. 1586-1611) was the first son of Prince Sanehito, the son of Emperor Ôgimachi (1517-93, r. 1557-86). His father having died young, Goyôzei took the throne after his grandfather. He established his own style in calligraphy with an elegant yet sharp touch. It is said that he mastered waka ("Japanese poem") composition under the instruction of Hosokawa Yûsai (1534-1610).
