This handscroll with poems on the four seasons bears a postscript by Cloistered Prince Sonchô (1563-1639). The postscript reveals that Sonchô wrote down these poems at the request of the empress. Prince Sonchô, the sixth son of Prince Fushiminomiya Kunisuke and the adopted son of Emperor Ôgimachi (1517-93, r. 1557-86), was a master of calligraphy in the Son'en style and his own style became known as Sonchô ryû in later years. Sonchô made this work when he was 33 years old.
