Zen calligraphy by successive abbots of Kyoto's Ôbakusan Manpuku-ji Temple is compiled in this handscroll. It consists of calligraphy by a total of twelve monks of the Ôbaku lineage, starting with calligraphy by the founder, Yinyuan Longqi (J., Ingen Ryûki, 1592-1673) and the second abbot Muan Xingtao (J., Mokuan Shôtô, 1611-84), followed by others. Manpuku-ji continued to have Chinese monks as abbots even long after Yinyuan Longqi, and their Ôbaku- and Chinese-style calligraphy had a great impact on the Japanese literati of the Edo period (1615-1869).
