These are early manuscripts of Shinkokin wakashû (E., New Collection of Japanese Poems of Ancient and Modern Times), one of the hachidaishû ("royal collections of eight reigns") compiled in the early Kamakura period (1185-1333). From the note at the end by Asukai Masayasu (1436-1509), we know that the work was copied by Asukai Masayori (1358-1428) and the archbishop Chûga. Masayasu is well known for his mastery of calligraphy and was the founder of the Nirakuin school of calligraphy.
