These are early manuscripts of three chokusen wakashû ("royal poetry collections"), the Gosen wakashû (E., Later Collection of Japanese Poetry), Shûi wakashû (E., Collection of Gleanings of Japanese Poems), and Shika wakashû (E., Collection of Verbal Flowers of Japanese Poems). The work is attributed to Yamazaki Sôkan (n.d.), a renga ("linked verse") and haiku poet of the late Muromachi period (1392-1573). Born in the province of Ômi (present-day Shiga Prefecture), he worked for the Ashikaga family and began using the pseudonym Sôkan after he took the tonsure.
