Human Figures, Birds, and Animals

Museum No.

This handscroll, over 16 meters in length, unfurls to reveal unexpected, often humorous scenes. The artist Rosetsu, who was trained in Kyoto under the master painter Maruyama Ōkyo (1733 –1795), did this in his late 20s or early 30s. While retaining Ōkyo’s influence, it also shows that Rosetsu’s had already developed his own distinctive style.
