The technique of doucai (“bean colors”)—hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze enamels—was developed during the Chenghua era (1426–1435) of the Ming in imperial kilns of Jingdezhen. With peony arabesques inside and out, these dishes exemplify the intricate doucai of the Qing dynasty.
