The artist, a prominent Shanghai businessman and leading disciple of Wu Changshuo, gave this painting to the Japanese collector Saitō Etsuzō (Tōan). In the inscription, he makes reference to a famous anecdote in which Tang poet Jia Dao asks senior poet Han Yu which Chinese character to use in a poem. The episode has come to symbolize the importance of word choice.
