This is a rare complete manuscript of the 9th-century classical literary masterpiece The Tales of Ise (Ise monogatari), which tells in exquisite prose and poetry of a courtier’s travels and romantic escapades. The 125 sections of text are accompanied by 45 illustrations, distinguished by their somewhat flat, elegantly decorative compositions.
