Overview

Folding Chair with Floral Arabesques

Museum No.
HK136

This unusual portable folding chair is of a type made in the Netherlands in the 17th century; however, this is the only known example using the Japanese decoration techniques of makie and inlaid mother-of-pearl. It was likely a custom commission by someone at the Dutch East India Company, probably for use during church services.
