The artist rendered the peonies in vibrant colors using a traditional technique referred to as “boneless” method (Ch: mogu fa, J: mokkotsuhō) that lacks of any outlines. Painted in his late years, it the work well represents him as an artist of the Haishang school of the late Qing dynasty.
