Maeda Toshitsune (1593-1658) was born the fourth son of Toshiie (1538-99), lord of the Maeda family in the province of Kaga (present-day Ishikawa Prefecture). This letter was written in cursive kana script, and signed "Saishô" by Toshitsune. Judging from the period of Toshitsune's appointment as saishô ("prime minister") and Hôshun'in's date of death mentioned in the text, the letter was written sometime between 1615 (Genna 1) and 1620 (Genna 6). Though the document originally in the form of origami ("folded paper") was cut in two, the initial condition has been maintained quite well, which makes it one of the few surviving letters in kana by Toshitsune.
