Various types of shari ("the relics of Buddha") containers were produced as the worshiping of shari became popular in the middle ages (12th-16th centuries). Shari containers in the shape of hôkyôintô ("treasure-casket seal stupas"), such as this piece, came into fashion during the Muromachi period (1392-1573). This work has a round crystal window at the center of the frame, where shari and a line-engraved image of the Buddha are installed. It has many more outer sections than similar examples. The ornate metal engraving of this work is the finest among contemporary shari stupas.
