This is a typical long-sleeved robe (J., furisode) of the Meiji court. Gorgeous patterns featuring flowers and birds of the four seasons, executed in generous strokes, became established as characteristic kosode (small-sleezed kimono) designs for women of the aristocracy during the late Edo period (1615-1868). Designs of this type continued to be popular among the women of the court during the Meiji period (1868-1912) as well. This design, featuring a single silk tree and clouds depicted solely in embroidered outline epitomizes the style.
