This kosode (small-sleeved kimono) belonged to Princess Tsune (the sixth daughter of the Meiji emperor and imperial consort of the Prince Takeda Tsunehisa; 1888-1940). The figured crepe (J., chirimen) has been dyed in graduated shades of purple and embroidered with boughs of cherry blossoms and maple leaves. This kosode, with original design, known as a "toilette robe," was worn between getting up in the morning and finishing breakfast. The tradition of the aristocracy appears in the rather thick thread and loose stitches of the embroidery.
