The composition, in which the pattern is weighted to the right side of this garment, suggests the typical "Kanbun kosode", which was fashionable in 1660, but a number of elements indicate a transitional design from kosode (small-sleeved kimono) of the Kanbun era (1661-1673) to that of the following Genroku era (1688-1704). A sense of motion is evident in the branches spreading across the left front, and the pattern beginning to fill the entire back of the garment. In terms of decorative technique as well, the use of the stenciled pattern of dots known as surihitta in place of the tie-dyed "fawn spots" (J., kanoko shibori) indicates a transitional piece.
