In recent years, the production area of Huanan three-color (Ch., sancai) ware has been identified as Fujian Province, China. In the past, it was thought to have been produced in Vietnam, and is therefore known as "Cochin-China sancai" ware. This plate is accompanied by an old wooden box bearing the inscription, "Kôchi plate with bird design" in black ink, indicating that it had been handed down in Japanese collections. The characters, "kôchi," probably refer to Cochin-China (Vietnam).
