This painting was given as a wedding gift; its imagery is full of fittingly auspicious associations. The characters for “lotus root” (actually lotus rhizome) in Chinese are homophonous with characters for “continuous” and “married couple.” Water chestnuts symbolize numerous offspring. This seemingly innocuous painting of vegetables is in fact rich with symbolism for the newlywed couple.
