Senbutsu are clay tiles with Buddhist images in relief, made by pressing clay into moulds, drying and then firing. Senbutsu have been excavated from the ruins of temples built in the late 7th and the 8th centuries, i.e., the late Asuka (ca. 600-645) through the Nara (710-794) periods. A number of examples have been found, particularly in Asuka district of Nara. Because moulds were used for making Buddhist images, numerous copies were produced at one time. Senbutsu were used to decorate the interior walls of temples.
