This dish, coated with white clay, bears a design engraved with tools such as a tracing spatula and comb. The gray foundation appears only where the design is carved. The dish displays typical characteristics of ceramics produced by the Cizhou kilns in northern China. Its shape and design suggest that it was probably made during the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127).
