The glazing effect that brings a worm-eaten appearance to the edge of the plate, used for this work, was a popular technique for stoneware in underglaze blue or in polychrome overglaze enamels. Such stoneware was popularly produced by private kilns in Jingdezhen, China, during the Tianqi (1621-27) and Chongzhen (1628-44) eras of the late Ming dynasty (1368-1644). This plate formerly belonged to the collection of Tomimoto Ken'ichi (1886-1963), who was designated a Living National Treasure for his porcelain iroe ("polychrome overglaze enamels") technique.
