In 1535 (Tenbun 4), the poet Sanjônishi Sanetaka (1455-1537) celebrated his eighty-first birthday and sent this letter expressing his joy to Emperor Gonara (1496-1557, r.1526-57). Sanetaka experienced the Ônin Rebellion (1467-77) in his youth, and indeed his whole life coincided with the period of ongoing conflicts among warlords (J.sengoku jidai, c. 1467-1568). Thus he was well acquainted with the glory of aristocratic society, now past, and his feelings of nostalgia and sadness are reflected in his words, "the long period of time during which events unfolded in the many years I have survived.
