The stencil dyeing kata yūzen technique was developed in the Meiji period (1868–1912) and employs stencils to create a repeated pattern. After a chemically colored resist paste is applied, the fabric is steamed to set the yūzen dye. The process allows to produce a larger quantity at a lower price in comparison to the hand-painted yūzen technique.
