On a vivid blue ground produced with chemical dyes, bright motifs stand out in bold relief. Brown and gray clumps of grass foreground and partially obscure the realistically depicted peonies and chrysanthemums, giving a modern impression not seen in earlier designs. The yûzen dye techniques are mainly the traditional thread-like white outlines of paste with color infills (J., irozashi).
