Lu Hui (1851-1920), whose sobriquet was Lianfu, used the pseudonym, Juan'an. He was born in Wujian in the province of Jiangsu, China. His artistic talents were acclaimed by Wu Dacheng (1835-1902), who was the governor of Hunan Province. Lu Hui subsequently became his retainer and even joined the army to serve at the Shanghai Pass. He excelled in landscape and flowering plant paintings and completed this work with plum, bamboo, and narcissus when he was 64-years-old. The brushwork is in the style of Wang Fu (1362-1416), the king of literati painters who lived in the early Ming dynasty (1368-1644).
