Today, the temples on the sacred mountain Hie-zan are divided into three major sections according to geographical features: the Eastern Pagoda, the Western Pagoda, and Yokawa. This painting depicts the Eastern Pagoda and its surroundings. The important halls and temples in the Eastern Pagoda including the temple of Hokke Sôji-in, hokke-dô ("hokke hall"), jôgyô-dô ("contemplation hall"), kô-dô ("lecture hall"), kaidan-in ("ordination platform hall"), et al., are depicted among the mountains in the style of yamatoe ("Japanese-style painting"). The portrait of Ennin, also known as Jikaku Daishi, appears in the bottom left quadrant.
