This type of clear blue porcelain vase (J., heiji) was brought to Japan in large numbers in the Kamakura period (1185-1333). Such vases were quite popular and have often been found in archeological excavations of samurai residences in Kamakura. Widely known as meipin ("plum-shaped bottle"), vases of this shape were popularly produced by the Seto kilns. Although not confirmed, this piece was probably excavated in Japan. Similar vases are housed at Danzan Shrine in Nara, and were possibly used to offer sacred sake to the gods.
