Nukina Sûô (1778-1863), whose family name was Yoshii, was born in the province of Awa (present-day Tokushima Prefecture). He used pseudonyms including Kaioku and Kaisen. He worked diligently at literary pursuits in Kyoto, particularly calligraphy, and is counted one of the Sanpitsu ("Three Master Calligraphers") of the final days of the Tokugawa shogunate (1615-1868). This calligraphy in the form of orihon ("folded book") was made by Sûô, probably as a calligraphy copybook for young people.
