In this work, poems are arranged in diagonal lines like sashes to tie up sleeves (J., tasuki) so that poems can be read in any direction. In the preface, Fujiwara Neiko, the artist of this work, refers to such compositions as "yaedasuki." Although popular from the late Heian period (795-1185), such poems were no longer being composed by the Muromachi period (1392-1573). Requested to compose the work by a certain person, Neiko did so only after careful recollection of how it was done.
