Watanabe Kazan (1793-1841), whose given name was Nobori, was a well-known southern-style painting artist, as well as a Western learning scholar. He studied painting under Tani Bunchô (1763-1840). He was later arrested in the incident of Bansha no goku ("political oppression against Western learning scholars"), and, leaving the phrase "Disloyalty and disobedience-Watanabe Nobori," as his last words, killed himself with a sword. This scroll clearly displays the extraordinary talents of Kazan in areas other than Western-style portraits.
