Isana is one of the Twelve Heavenly Figures (Devas), who represent the twelve directions in Esoteric Buddhism. This early Kamakura iconographic drawing on oil paper, with a Kozan-ji provenance, is believed to have been traced from another drawing and was originally part of a set of twelve scrolls. The three scrolls of the Twelve Heavenly Figures in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston appear to be part of this series. This is a noteworthy piece with its meticulous brushwork and notations indicating its coloration.
