During the Meiji period (1868–1912), a kimono of simple color tone such as this was worn by women as street wear. From a distant view, it may appear plain-looking, but when seen up close, one notices that it is covered with a fancy design of small stenciled patterns. At the time it was fashionable to combine such a garment with a vibrant red under kimono.
