The name of Chôsen Eikai was first introduced in the book entitled Honchô gashi ("Japanese Art History") in which he was described as a close friend of Kanô Sansetsu (1590-1651). Besides this work painted in the Ming style, it is known that he produced a pair of six-fold screens, Flowers and Birds. According to these records, he was a well-known monk painter of the time.
