Kakinomoto Hitomaro (dates unknown, d. 708-715 at about the age of fifty?) has long been revered as one of the greatest Japanese poets. Many portraits of this poet have been painted and hung for the Hitomaro eigu, a ceremony in which he is worshipped as a poetic deity. According to tradition, this ceremony dedicated to Hitomaro originated around 1201 when the governor of Sanuki Province, Kurita Kanefusa (n.d.), struggling to compose a 31-syllable Japanese poems (J., waka), had a dream, in which Hitomaro appeared before him. Kanefusa's literary prowess was said to have improved after he painted this poetic sage from his dream and worshipped this image.
